When The Lights Go Out
When The Lights Go Out is my Student Thesis Capstone Project, created for and debuted at the Rutgers Camden 2023 Senior Thesis Show Out Of Line. The Short is a suspenseful spectacle of our protagonist Theda, alone in a large house in the middle of a stormy night, when the lights go out. Armed only with a candlestick, she braves the long hallways, until she catches sight of dark shadowy creatures roaming the halls…who might not be all that scary after all.
I began developing the short in 2022, knowing that I wanted my piece to be an interesting visual work in design. As a character designer and visual development artist, I wanted to push my skills to create a very interesting composition and style. I based my research off of illustrations by Edward Gorey and Charles Addams, and various newspaper and magazine clippings from the 1920s. I also took inspiration from UPA cartoons of the 1950s, and Old silent films. From there, I worked to create a unique look and world for my story to take place.
